Annahstacia Muindi
My name is Annahstacia Muindi. I was born in 1989 in Mtito Andei division of Eastern Province. I have only one parents and my father died some years ago. I came from a poor family where we usually rely on rain. I have three sisters and one brother. Two sisters dropped out of school when they were in secondary. My brother has already finished standard eight but has not joined secondary because there is no money for education.
I joined High School in 2007 in Kitenei Secondary School and I struggled until I reached form four last term in 2010. I dropped because I had no money for KCSE and school fees. As I was in form one in 2007, I started struggling in order to learn. When I dropped out this year I decided to find a job in order to get exam fees plus school fees. Later I migrated to my sister’s who was married in Maasailand by a poor man in order to stay there searching for a job.
When I was moving here and there I met one of the teachers in Kaputiei High School to whom I expressed my situation because I was in need of a job. That teacher advised me to join Kaputiei High School in order to continue with my education until I finish form four. I thought it was very good advice and I decided to join form three.

From my birth until the year 1997, I lived in Kariobangi. At the end of 1996, together with my parents I moved to Embakasi Constituency and settled in a place called Mukuru Kwa Ruben until the year 2000 when my mother passed away. Since we were single parented and could not live alone, we were forced to go back to Kariobangi where we lived with our grandmother.
In the year 2000 (Feb 12) we (my younger brother and I) were taken to a slum called Soweto where we intermingled with children of a lady who I came to know later was among the first people to start the Jamii Bora organisation. We did not stay there long before we were taken to a place called Kitengela where Mama Ingrid had started a children’s home.
I joined school in 2001 and completed my primary level of education in 2006. Thereafter I joined a secondary school on the Kenya-Tanzania border. After the second year, Mama Ingrid started to build a secondary school for us which made us stay out of school for a whole year. This is why I am in form three when I am supposed to be completing my high school level. But thank God I am in school now.
My vision now is to excel in education and become independent. I am happy that I am healthy and I take part in different activities like playing football and dancing. I believe apart from education there is something else that might help me in the future. I am part of a group of dancers who are determined and focused. We have started seeing light in a tunnel.
